- January 11 - 12-year old Shanda Sharer is kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence in one of the worst crimes to occur in the history of the state of Indiana.

- February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole.
- February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.
- March 17 - Hezbollah perpetrates a suicide bombing on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina in retaliation for the assassination of Abbas al-Musawi, killing 29 people and injuring 242 others.
- April 2 - Beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo.
- April 2 - John Gotti is found guilty of murder, loansharking, illegal gambling, obstruction of justice, bribery and tax evasion, and is sentenced to life in prison.

However, UNITA declares the results as fraudulent and resume hostilities against the government, restarting the Angolan Civil War.
