  • February 17 - Colonel William R. Higgins, the leader of a U.S. Army observation unit in Lebanon, is kidnapped by Hezbollah.
  • March 6 - Three Irish Republican Army volunteers are shot to death by the SAS while attending to bomb British military personnel in Gibraltar.
  • March 16 - Milltown Cemetery massacre: Michael Stone attacks the funeral of the Gibraltar Three, killing three mourners.
  • March 19 - Two British army corporals, Derek Wood and David Howes, are lynched by Irish republicans after accidentally driving into the funeral of one of the Milltown massacre victims.

  • May 20 - Laurie Dann shoots and kills one boy, Nick Corwin, and wounds two girls and three boys in a Winnetka, Illinois elementary school. She then takes a family hostage and shoots another man, non-fatally, before killing herself.

  • July 25-27 - József Barsi murders his wife Maria Barsi and daughter, child actress Judith Barsi, at their home in Canoga Park, California before committing suicide.
  • August 1 - The Provisional IRA bombs Inglis Barracks, London, killing one soldier and injuring nine.
  • August 11 - Al-Qaeda is founded is by Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abdullah Yusuf Azzam.
  • August 20 - The Iran-Iraq War ends in a stalemate, with both Iran and Iraq claiming victory.
  • August 22 - Tsutomu Miyazaki kills his first victim Mari Konno.
  • September 18 - The State Peace and Development Council, under the leadership of General Saw Maung, seizes power in Burma.
  • September 23 - Mel Ignatow & Mary Ann Shore, kidnapped, raped and murdered Ignatow's former girlfriend Brenda Sue Schaefer.
  • December 21 - Pan Am Flight 103 is bombed over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew. Muammar Gaddafi claims responsibility for the attack.
  • December 22 - The Angolan Tripartite Accord is signed by Cuba, Angola, and South Africa, ending direct involvement of foreign troops in the Angolan Civil War.
