  • January 30 - The Polish United Workers' Party is dissolved.
  • January 31 - The United States ends its invasion of Panama.
  • February - On the recommendation of the United States as well as other Central American countries, the Nicaraguan Contras agree to ceasefire terms with the Sandinista National Liberation Front and agree to disarm and disband themselves.
  • February 6 - Juan Manuel Cardenas Jr. is found guilty of the murder of his classmate and love interest, Jacalyn Rene Calabrese, he was sent to one year of jail.
  • March 11 - Augusto Pinochet steps down as President of Chile.
  • March 21 - End of the South African Border War.
  • April 24 - Nursultan Nazarbayev is elected President of Kazakhstan.
  • April 25 - Daniel Ortega's first term as President of Nicaragua comes to an end.
  • May 20 - The Oyoun Qara massacre: Ami Popper kills 7 Palestinian Arabs at a bus stop in Rishon Lezion, Israel. He is apprehended by the Israeli police an hour later.
  • May 22 - Yemen is unified under the rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is named president of the new republic.
  • June 11 - The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam massacre over 600 Sri Lankan police officers in the Eastern Province.
  • July 26 - Alberto Fujimori is elected President of Peru.
  • July 30 - British politician and former Member of Parliament Ian Gow is assassinated by an Irish Republican Army car bomb outside his home in England.
  • August 2 - Saddam Hussein invades and tries to annex Kuwait. Beginning of the Gulf War.
  • September 9 - Prince Johnson's Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (a breakaway faction of Charles Taylor's NPFL) captures Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia. He subsequently captures, tortures, and brutally murders President Samuel Doe in an internationally televised display.
  • October 1 - The Rwandan Civil War begins when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) invades the country from Uganda to oppose the MRND regime of Juvénal Habyarimana.
  • October 3 - Germany is reunified as Federal Republic of Germany.
  • October 13 - End of the Lebanese Civil War.
  • October 23 - End of the Third Indochina War.
  • November 5 - Meir Kahane is assassinated by Egyptian national El Sayyid Nosair shortly after giving a speech at the New York Marriott East Side hotel in New York City. The incident is considered to be one of the earliest examples of Islamic terrorism in the United States.
  • November 28 - Lee Kuan Yew steps down as Prime Minister of Singapore.
  • December 1 - Hissène Habré is deposed as President of Chad and goes into exile in Senegal. Idriss Déby declares himself president.
  • December 17 - Hassan Ngeze publishes The Hutu Ten Commandments, a document which becomes the central doctrine of the Hutu Power movement.
  • December 22 - Franjo Tuđman is elected the first President of Croatia.
