  • January 29 - Hui Chi-wai, Ng Ming-chun, Chan Tak-ming and Fu Hin-chun are sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Luk Chi-wai.
  • February 2 - Hugo Chávez is elected President of Venezuela.
  • March 6 - InfoWars is launched by Alex Jones.
  • March 17 - Fan Man-yee is kidnapped, tortured, then killed by Chan Man-lok and two accomplices.

  • April 20 - The Columbine High School massacre: students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold kill 13 people and injure 24 others before committing suicide in a school shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

  • August 10 - Buford Furrow goes on a shooting rampage at the Los Angeles Jewish Community Center. He wounded five people: three children, a teenage counselor, and an office worker. Shortly thereafter, Furrow murdered a mail carrier, fled the state, and finally surrendered to authorities.
