  • January 22 - The National Liberation Army, a militant group comprised of Macedonian Albanians, launches an insurgency against the government of Macedonia in an attempt to assert greater control over the country.
  • February 9 - Chuan Leekpai's second term as Prime Minister of Thailand comes to an end.

  • March 9 - Armin Meiwes kills and cannibalizes Bernd Jürgen Brandes, who willingly allowed himself to be killed and cannibalized after answering an ad put up by Meiwes on the website The Cannibal Cafe.
  • April 10 - Robert William Fisher murders his wife and two children, sets their house on fire, and goes on the run. He remains at large to present day.
  • April 25 to May 1 - EDSA 3 riot which was caused by the arrest of deposed Philippines President Joseph Estrada.
  • May 12 - Inderjit Kainth murders 16 year old Rosie Ross while she sunbathed with her friend, Sarah Elstob.

  • June 13 - Law and Justice is founded by twin brothers Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński.
  • June 20 - Andrea Yates murders her children by drowning each of them in the bathtub.
  • June 20 - Pervez Musharraf is named President of Pakistan after two years of military rule.
  • July 10 - Sef Gonzales, kills his parents and sister, over his car being taken away.
  • August 6 - Hugo Banzer is forced to resign as President of Bolivia due to lung cancer.
  • August 14 - The Justice and Development Party is founded by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
  • September 11 - Islamic terrorists affiliated with Al-Qaeda hijack four planes and crash them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The Twin Towers are destroyed completely and the Pentagon is partially damaged. The fourth plane was targeting either the White House or the Capitol Building, but was brought down by the passengers before it could reach its destination.
  • September 18 - Anthrax is sent to various U.S. politicians, being sent in letters containing anthrax spores; these letters were mailed to several news media offices and two Democratic U.S. Senators (Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy), killing 5 people and infecting 17 others.
  • October 7 - The United States invades Afghanistan and overthrows the Taliban-controlled government, beginning the War in Afghanistan. Taliban leader Mohammed Omar goes into hiding.
  • November 5 - Andrew Bagby was killed by his wife
  • November 8 - Katherine Knight becomes the first woman in Australian history to receive a life sentence without parole after being found guilty of murdering and cannibalizing her partner, John Price.
  • November 12 - The insurgency in Macedonia comes to an end. This marks the end of the Yugoslav Wars.
  • November 28 - Christopher Pittman murders his grandparents, Joe and Joy Pittman, and burns down their house.
  • November 30 - Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, is apprehended and arrested as he was leaving the Renton, Washington Kenworth Truck factory where he worked.
  • December 1 - United Russia is founded.
