- February 1 - Yang Xinhai is sentenced to death for 67 counts of murder in 26 separate indictments.
- February 4 - Aum Shinrikyo leader Shoko Asahara is sentenced to death for 27 counts of murder in 13 separate indictments.
- February 27 - Islamic terrorist group Abu Sayyaf bombs the ship SuperFerry 14 in Manila Bay in the Philippines, leaving 116 people dead in the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the Philippines.
- March 2 - Al-Qaeda detonates nine bombs at various mosques throughout the city of Karbala, Iraq, with the target being Shi'a Muslims commemorating the Day of Ashura. 178 people are killed and at least 500 others are injured.
- March 11 - The 2004 Madrid train bombings take place in Madrid, Spain, when 13 improvised explosive devices detonate on board four commuter trains travelling between Alcalá de Henares and the Atocha stations, killing 193 people and injuring 2,050. The attacks, which are linked to Al-Qaeda, are the deadliest in Spanish history.
- April 2 - 14-year-old Gina DeJesus is kidnapped by Ariel Castro while on the way home from her middle school at West 105th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland.
- April 16 - Bahía Portete massacre: the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia kill 12 people and displace close to 250 others in Uribia, Colombia.
- May 22 - The use of torture by U.S. military personnel on Iraqi prisoners of war at Abu Ghraib prison is exposed by The Washington Post.
- June 1 - The Sasebo slashing: 11-year old Natsumi Tsuji kills her classmate, 12-year old Satomi Mitarai, in an empty class room at an elementary school in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
- June 18 - The Houthis begin their rebellion against the government of Yemen.
- July 25 - Brian Blackwell murders his parents, Sydney and Jacqueline Blackwell, over a dispute regarding his extravagant spending.
- July 28 - Stefan Pakeerah was killed by his friend Warren Leblanc.
- September 1 - Scott Erskine is found guilty of the 1993 murders of Charlie Keever and Jonathan Sellers and receives the death penalty.
- September 1 to 3 - The Beslan school siege takes place, leaving 334 people dead and over a thousand imprisoned by the time it ends.
- September 30 - Liu Hongwen kills 4 students at the school he worked before showing himself to the authorities.
- November 1 - The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine perpetrates a suicide bombing at the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv, Isrsel which kills 3 Israeli civilians.
- November 13 - Liu Hongwen is found not guilty of killing four of his students due to being schizophrenic, he is sent to a mental hospital instead of jail.
- November 23 - Beginning of the Central African Republic Bush War.
- December 4 - Liu Zhigang injures 12 students at a school.
- December 8 - Heavy metal guitarist Darrell "Dimebag Darrell" Abbott is assassinated by Nathan Gale while performing at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio with his band Damageplan. Three other people are killed before Gale himself is shot and killed by a police officer.
- December 20 - Liu Zhigang is found not guilty of injuring 12 students at a school.
