• January 11 - 12-year old Shanda Sharer is kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence in one of the worst crimes to occur in the history of the state of Indiana.
• January 16 - End of the Salvadoran Civil War.
• February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole.
• February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.
• March 17 - Hezbollah perpetrates a suicide bombing on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina in retaliation for the assassination of Abbas al-Musawi, killing 29 people and injuring 242 others.
• April 2 - Beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo.
• April 2 - John Gotti is found guilty of murder, loansharking, illegal gambling, obstruction of justice, bribery and tax evasion, and is sentenced to life in prison.
• April 5 - Alberto Fujimori dissolves the Peruvian congress, imposing censorship and having opposition politicians arrested, igniting a constitutional crisis.
• April 6 - Beginning of the Bosnian War.
• April 7 - Radovan Karadžić is named the inaugural president of the newly-created Republika Srpska.
• April 10 - The Provisional IRA detonates a large truck bomb outside the Baltic Exchange building in London. Two bystanders and a Baltic Exchange attendant are killed.
• April 16 - Mohammad Najibullah resigns as President of Afghanistan. The People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan is dissolved.
• April 23 - Than Shwe succeeds Saw Maung as Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council in Burma.
• April 23 - The Communist Party of Czechoslovakia is dissolved.
• May 5 - Beginning of the Tajikistani Civil War.
• July 13 - Yitzhak Shamir's second term as Prime Minister of Israel comes to an end.
• September 12 - Abimael Guzmán is captured by Peruvian officials. Shining Path collapses.
• September 20 - Chuan Leekpai is elected Prime Minister of Thailand.
• September 29 to 30 - Angola holds its first-ever democratic elections. José Eduardo dos Santos is reelected president and his MPLA win the majority in the National Assembly. However, UNITA declares the results as fraudulent and resume hostilities against the government, restarting the Angolan Civil War.
• October 4 - End of the Mozambican Civil War.
• October 18 - Beginning of the Croat-Bosniak War.
• October 30 to November 1 - The Halloween Massacre takes place in Luanda, Angola when government forces massacre thousands in an attempt to force UNITA out of the city.
• November 2 - The Irish People's Liberation Organization is dissolved.
• November 20 - Emomali Rahmon is elected President of Tajikistan.
• Unknown - Rwandan Hutu Power activists break away from MRND to form the Coalition for the Defence of the Republic.
• Unknown - The Special Anti-Robbery Squad is established as part of the Nigerian Police Force.
• Unknown - Bernadette Protti is released from prison on parole after only serving seven years.
