January 11 - 12-year old Shanda Sharer is kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence in one of the most gruesome and horrific crimes to occur in the history of the state of Indiana.
January 16 - End of the Salvadoran Civil War.
February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole.
February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.
April 2 - Beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo.
April 6 - Beginning of the Bosnian War.
April 7 - Radovan Karadžić is named the inaugural president of the newly-created Republika Srpska.
