February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole, for his murders.
February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.
April 6 - Beginning of the Bosnian War.
April 7 - Radovan Karadžić is named the inaugural president of the newly-created Republika Srpska.
April 10 - The Provisional IRA detonates a large truck bomb outside the Baltic Exchange building in London. Two bystanders and a Baltic Exchange attendant are killed.
April 16 - Mohammad Najibullah resigns as President of Afghanistan.
April 23 - Than Shwe succeeds Saw Maung as Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council in Burma.
September 12 - Abimael Guzmán is captured by Peruvian officials. Shining Path collapses.
