- January 11 - 12-year old Shanda Sharer is kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence in one of the most gruesome and horrific crimes to occur in the history of the state of Indiana.
- February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole.
- February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.

- April 7 - Radovan Karadžić is named the inaugural president of the newly-created Republika Srpska.
- April 10 - The Provisional IRA detonates a large truck bomb outside the Baltic Exchange building in London. Two bystanders and a Baltic Exchange attendant are killed.
